For FLIK 2008, Art Outlet has formally partnered with the Art Whino Gallery to expand upon last year’s success by expanding the call out to a wider variety of moviemakers. There will be more screenings, a larger venue, a coinciding interactive exhibit, and a licensing of the program to allow for screenings both locally and internationally – thus expanding exposure for the selected filmmakers. The screenings took place on July 26 & 26, 2008.

FLIK interactive is a show of 2 and 3-D and interactive new media art about the influence of technology at Art Whino July 25 - August 29, 2008. Computing, virtual worlds, online social networking and mechanical and electronic technologies have transformed how we humans hook up and how we view the world. Is this influence utopic or dystopic? Sublime or irrelevant? Is this about beauty? FLIK interactive will reflect on these technologies and forms of computer mediated social interaction.

No Flash in the Pan: FLIK Festival
THE FLIK FESTIVAL began as a venue for filmmakers using Flash software to showcase their work on the big screen instead of the computer screen. Now, the indie fest is back for a second year with twice as many artists, an interactive portion and lots of expectation.
"Last year, [there] was a 90-minute program and we had 13 artists," said Joshua Barlow, art advisory chair of Art Outlet, "and this year we have 21 artists and an over three-hour program. ... There are so many different types of artists and so many different emotions and tones. I want people to feel like they've had a real journey of experience."
Founders Art Whino and Art Outlet have joined forces to host festival screenings at the gallery's pristineNational Harbor location.
"They've always managed to keep their venue extremely intimate. I like having the screening in the same room as everything else so that people can interact with each other," said Barlow.

The Eyes Have It
It could be your excuse to hop that ferry and check out the burgeoning commercial district that is National Harbor: The Flik International Movie Festival and Interactive Exhibit are at Art Whino.
Today is the second and final night of the film festival, which will screen genre-blending shorts contributed by filmmakers from around the world, including Iran Davar Ardalan (an author and a producer with National Public Radio); Rodney Ascher, who has done videos for the singer Liz Phair; and VidLit, which animates written material (for example, "A Virgin's Guide to Everything") with Flash Technology for Web-ready consumption. Performances by local troubadour Vandaveer and weird-gician David London (whose, um, unconventional magic act recently was featured in a Washington City Paper cover story) help mix things up a bit.
The film festival, curated by Joshua Barlow and organized with Art Outlet and Art Whino, launched last year with a screening at the Warehouse Next Door and has expanded to include a broader array of entries. There was only one rule: Submissions were to blend both old and new technologies. The 40 films selected range from one minute to 14 minutes long.
Tonight and through most of next month, you can also catch Flik's first art exhibition, which will include 2-D, 3-D and interactive offerings exploring how technology affects our worldview, provided by 19 mostly local artists (one is a 7-year-old printmaker, another is a toy designer, and so on). Andrea Collins of Art Outlet curated the show.
